Our 2021 Symposium
It was with great sadness that we, again, had to cancel our annual summer symposium, due to be held in Fjallnas, Sweden. The very nature of our event is to bring together disparate people from multiple fields and industries, but also from different countries and geographic locations. As the pandemic continued to disrupt the travel industry it became clear to us that we simply could not find a way to bring people from around the world to the same place.
This is the second year in a row that we have had to cancel our event and it is a significant decision for us to make. Our mission is to bring people together to exchange ideas, to develop their practice and to challenge themselves to find new ways of thinking about the world, the symposiums is at the heart of that and it is extremely disheartening to have to cancel, especially since we were not able to meet in 2020 either.
However, we remain fully committed to our cause, and we hope that we can resume the symposium next year.
Alpine Fellowship’s First Film Project
In 2019, director Megan Maczko approached us with the idea of making a short film at our symposium. Since we exist to offer new opportunities to artists we agreed and came to serve as co-producers for a film that is now winning awards and being shown at film festivals around the world.
Building on our theme for 2019, which was Identity, Fjallnas is a dark comedy about identity, hypocrisy and single-use plastic.
Here is a brief synopsis:
“Alba Fianna has created a masterpiece. Her sculpture composed of single-use plastic has taken the world by storm, propelling her to fame and fortune, but when she arrives in remote Sweden as the guest of honour at a symposium on identity, a critic will stop at nothing to expose the truth.”

FOLK by Nell Leyshon at the Hampstead Theatre
Dramatist and novelist Nell Leyshon has been a great friend to the Alpine Fellowship over the years. She’s spoken at several of our events, she is a member of our Advisory Board and she headed up our partnership project with The Outsider’s Project.
We were delighted to hear that Nell’s latest play FOLK will be performed at the Hampstead Theatre in north London over the Christmas period. The play is being directed by Roxana Silbert, who is Artistic Director of the Hampstead Theatre and was one of the head judges of our Theatre Prize this year.
If you find yourself in London and want to see an incredible new play by a wonderful writer, get your tickets on the link below.
Looking ahead to 2022
It’s almost hard to believe that 2021 is drawing to a close and yet we have already begun making plans for next year. As always, we will be running our four prizes in Academic Writing, Art, Theatre and Writing, we hope to return our successful Associate Fellows programme that was sadly cut short and we really hope that we will get to host our symposium and bring people together once again.
If you’re interested in applying for any one of our prizes, here are few key dates for your diary. They’re subject to change, but should give you a good idea of deadlines.
