Autumn 2024

Welcome to the Alpine Fellowship Journal for Autumn 2024.

The autumn, for us, is about looking back and looking forward. We look back on the year that has gone, including the prizes we have handed out to talented creatives and academics all over the world; and we look ahead to what 2025 will bring.

But first we must begin by saying goodbye to a wonderful friend.

John Burnside

1955-2024

We were devastated to learn of the death of John Burnside, who passed away on 29th May 2024.

John had a long and meaningful relationship with the Alpine Fellowship. He was a Writing Prize judge, founder of our Poetry Prize, a wonderful speaker and a good friend. You can view many of John’s engaging talks and lectures in the Content section of our website.

He is survived by his wife, their two children, Lucas and Gil, and their grandson, Apollo.

The 2025 Symposium

In July, we invited our prize winners, along with a selection of wonderful speakers to Tuscany, Italy for three days of dicussion, debate and performance. As always, we have made all of the talks available on our YouTube Channel, where they can be enjoyed completely free anywhere in the world.

So visit our YouTube Channel now to see John McWhorter, Es Devlin, Esther Perel, Ayishat Akanbi, Martin Puchner, George Butler and many more.

Looking ahead to 2025

In 2024, we evaluated 5,420 entries from 147 countries, and so we know exactly how much people look forward to entering our prizes.

We haven’t announced the theme yet, though we hope to soon. But the prize cycle will be the same as previous years.

Prizes will accept entries from 1st January - 1st March 2025.

That’s all for now…
