Spring 2023

Welcome to the Alpine Fellowship Journal for Spring 2023.

As we write, we’re hard at work evaluating the thousands of entries to each of our prizes, and we’re busy planning our next symposium.

We made a few changes to the prizes this year, and there’s a little more detail on that below, as well as a summary of the exciting plans for 2023.

But before we look forward, we want to look back. Especially because this year is an important one for us.

Alpine Fellowship at 10

It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since we were founded and hosted our first symposium.

We were a lot smaller back then, but our mission remained exactly the same; to encourage the sharing of ideas and knowledge, to bring together people from disconnected fields and to support new talent in a variety of art forms.

In ten years, we’ve hosted symposiums all over Europe, we’ve handed out tens of thousands of pounds of financial support to emerging talent, and we’ve created hours of free intellectual and educational content.

Our reach and ambition are growing all the time and we look forward to the next ten years.

2023 Symposium

After the success of our 2022 symposium, we find ourselves re-energised and re-committed to the goal of bringing people from all over the world and across disciplines together.

So, we are now hard at work planning the 2023 symposium, which will be held in Fjallnas, Sweden.

Some of you might remember that we were hosted by Fjallnas in 2019 and had been due to visit there again in 2020 before the pandemic caused us to cancel.

So we’re delighted to be revisiting this beautiful, picturesque and unique venue that is the perfect place to explore this year’s theme. We look forward to welcoming a host of great speakers, invited guests and, of course, our 2023 prize winners.

And speaking of prizes, we’ve made some changes to one of our prizes this year. To find out more, read on.

Alpine Fellowship Academic Prize

In 2020 we were excited to launch the Alpine Fellowship Academic Writing Prize, an opportunity for us to discover new academic talent and to offer them much-needed financial support.

This year, we’ve made some changes to this prize to ensure that we’re offering targeted support to academics in a field that has been close to our heart since our foundation ten years ago: philosophy.

Philosophy has always been one of our core areas. However, we have never committed funding that focused exclusively on this area, and this year we decided to correct that. And so, the Academic Writing Prize has become the Academic Prize. And instead of rewarding a piece of writing, we’re offering support to academics currently studying philosophy at the postgraduate level in the UK.

The 2023 Prizes

While we’re based in the UK, we’ve always offered financial support to emerging artists, writers, academics and playwrights anywhere in the world. However, in recent years we have noticed that we’re starting to get more applications from further afield. Since we also want to make sure that the unique togetherness offered by our symposium is prioritised, we have reconsidered and restructured the financial support offered by our prizes in 2023.

In short, we want to make sure that we’re offering the right amounts of travel subsidy so that our winners can afford to get to our symposium, no matter where they are coming from.

You can find out more about the prize money on offer on each individual prize page.

Alpine Fellowship’s NYU Programme

We have enjoyed a long and enduring relationship with New York University. One of the most meaningful ways that we work together is by offering two graduate students per year help towards tuition and the opportunity to attend the annual Alpine Fellowship symposium.

In 2022, we welcomed graduate students Cat Sposato and Xavier Hadley to the UK and were delighted to have them in attendance. We’re pleased to say that the NYU Programme will be continuing in 2023.

What happens now?

If you’re one of the over 3,000 people who submitted your work to one of our prizes this year, then you’re probably wondering what happens next. Well, it’s slightly different for each prize, but the next step is that our team of highly-skilled and experienced readers and judges get to work narrowing down the fields.

We then will publish shortlists for most prizes before the shortlists are sent to our final round judges, who are all leaders in their fields.

We expect to let the winners know in April, and we will let everyone know the results of their application.

We do ask, however, that you be patient. We are a small team, and there is a lot of excellent work for us to evaluate and judge.

YouTube Channel

Our symposium has always attracted extraordinary speakers. All of them are industry experts and thought leaders in a diverse array of fields.

At our 2022 symposium, we had one of our best line-ups to date as we welcomed Esther Perel and Yuval Noah Harari, amongst others, onto our stages.

We’re often limited in the number of guests we can invite to the symposium, but we’re committed to making sure that all of the excellent content that we create is made available to anyone who wants to engage all over the world.

If you haven’t already, please visit our YouTube Channel, where you can find all of the talks from our 2022 symposium, as well as our extended back catalogue of content arranged by year.

That’s all for now…
