Winter 2021/Spring 2022

Welcome to the Alpine Fellowship Journal. This edition is a bumper one covering the past two seasons.

The headlines this year are all about our prizes. As you may know, each Spring we run prizes for Academic Writing, Theatre, Writing and Visual Art, and this year we also introduced a brand new prize (more on that in a bit.)

Alpine Fellowship Poetry Prize

In the past, we’ve encouraged poets to enter in to our Writing Prize and they’ve always performed well. However, we felt that poets would be better served by having their own space, their own criteria and their own judging panel, who focus exclusively on poetry.

And so the Alpine Fellowship Poetry Prize was born.

We encouraged poets to submit a single work or collection of works that all responded in some way to our theme. In it’s first year the Poetry Prize attracted almost 2,000 entries and has already been a huge success for us.

The judging panel will include previous Writing Prize judges Gillan Clarke and John Burnside, who will be joined by Jamaican poet and essayist Ishion Hutchinson.

We’re extremely excited to be giving more bespoke support to the poets out there, and we can’t wait to read the entries.

2022 Symposium Update

After the last two years resulted in cancelled events, this year we’re delighted at the prospect of meeting up again in person for our annual symposium. This is our chance to bring together people from all walks of life, disciplines and industries in the spirit of conversation and friendship.

We’re pleased to announce that our 2022 symposium will be held at Ellenborough Park, in the UK. Ellenborough Park is a magnificent 15th century English country estate near Cheltenham, that has everything we believe we will need to have a memorable and much needed gathering.

We look forward to welcoming a host of great speakers, invited guests and, of course, our 2022 prize winners.

Alpine Fellowship Associate Fellows

One of the highlights of our 2021 programme of work was the introduction of he Associate Fellows scheme. This is designed to allow people whose work does not fit into one of our prize catagories to engage meaningfully with the Alpine Fellowship and to attend our symposium. Last year we interviewed people from around the world with a truly extraordinary range of talents and abilities. Sadly, our symposium was cancelled and so we were unable to meet them in person.

This year, we’re proud to be running the Associate Fellows scheme again. Applications are currently open, so if you think you would benefit from attending our symposium, please apply. You can find more details on how to apply on the webpage, which you’ll find by clicking the link below.

Alpine Fellowship’s NYU Programme

We’re proud to have a long and enduring relationship with New York University. One of the most meaningful ways that we work together is by offering two graduate students per year help towards tuition, and the unique opportunity to attend the annual Alpine Fellowship symposium.

If you’re a current graduate student at GSAS or Tisch, we are now welcoming applications until 1st May 2022. Please note, that selected students must still be matriculated at the time of the symposium (August 2022). Strong candidates will include those whose work strives to build bridges across disparate fields of study in the humanities, while creatively synthesizing the arts, literature, philosophy, and other humanistic fields of inquiry.

What happens now?

If you’re one of the over 5,000 people who submitted your work to one of our prizes this year, then you’re probably wondering what happens next. Well, it’s slightly different for each prize, but the next step is that our team of highly-skilled and experienced readers and judges get to work narrowing down the fields. We then will publish shortlists for most prizes, before the shortlists are sent to our final round judges, who are all leaders in their fields.

We expect to let the winners know in around July. But, please know, that we will let everyone know the results of their application.

That’s all for now…

We hope you enjoy some of the content we’ve shared this quarter and that you’re excited to apply to our prizes next year.
